A contentious 1907 record

Among the Foundation's early documentary holdings are reports concerning the whaling brig Vesper, which burned while moored before a disputed voyage. Contemporary papers disagreed on its planned operations and the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The crew was reportedly ashore, and the preserved inquiry did not determine the cause. Edmund Wrenfield and Laurence Bellamy were known opponents of the proposed expedition and subsequently backed broader marine-life protections.

An archive, not a verdict

The Foundation's archival catalogue preserves conflicting sources without asserting that its founders caused or prevented the destruction. Researchers interested in early conservation rhetoric should compare the materials in their original historical contexts.
